“ It was a cold evening so udon soup sounded like a delicious pick. I was in the area so I decided to try OkiDoki by Meiji. I hear that their chef was technically trained in Japan for over 30 years and they import their flour from Japan to maintain the standards. While reviewing the menu, I didn't feel like any one item on its' own so I had to order multiple items and do add ons to get everything I wanted. I ordered the Kitsune Udon ($14.25) and I added a Poached Egg ($2). And I added the Assorted Tempura ($12). The udon noodle itself has a great texture and chewiness. It was the broth that I wasn't too impressed with. Maybe a tad bland. The egg was much needed and improved the soup a lot. To their credit it was perfectly poached and when it popped, the color was vibrant like a really quality Pasteur organic egg. The tempura had a decent assortment and I definitely didn't need all of that but the crunch was needed to balance my meal. Like it but not that in love with it. Maybe I'll try a different flavor in the future to see if the broth on a different bowl tastes better. But I wouldn't really go out of my way for it. ”
“ Okidoki by Meiji never disappoints! The broth is rich and flavorful, and the fish is always incredibly fresh. With plenty of seating and the convenience of Yelp waitlists, dining here is effortless. The mellow ambiance makes it a great spot to relax, and we find ourselves coming back often. Their happy hour is fantastic, and the staff is always kind and respectful. Definitely a go-to spot! ”
“ I came with three friends for lunch on a Saturday and was pleased that we got seated within just a few minutes. My friends were craving udon, but I went for rolls - my standards, spider roll and spicy tuna roll. Honestly they weren't outstanding, but they were good. My friends loved what they got, so that made for a positive experience. The servers were very attentive - food came out quickly, water refilled promptly without having to ask, etc. ”
“ Everything was yummy. Service was great. You can make a reservation online. It's a little tight with all the tables close to each other, so unless you ”
“ We tried a little bit of everything--beef curry udon, pork shabu shabu, spicy beef udon, katsu curry udon, and to top it all off, the caramel flan. Let me tell you, the fresh udon noodles were next-level, and the broth flavors were on point! The flan? So moist and perfectly sweet. If you love udon or just want some comforting Japanese flavors, this spot is a must-try! ”
“ SPICY SEAFOOD UDON FTW!!! Wow I'm impressed! If you're looking for a delicious spicy (but not too crazy) seafood soup this is your dish! There's ton of clams and fat shrimps and the broth stays hot the entire time with the flame. The cheese rice ball is the cherry on top! It's got that hard chewy exterior like grilled rice and it soaks up the broth ... soooo good! Get the dish you won't regret it! ”
“ I usually go to the Meiji location in Costa Mesa but this is a little closer to me. I came here on a Sunday for lunch with some friends, we added our name to the waitlist when we reached 5 miles from the restaurant. Only waited about 20 mins when we arrived at 1130am. Service was good, food took a bit of time but the place was slammed. I love how bouncy and chewy the noodles are. The broth was rich and spicy and I loved the fried rice ball to put inside your soup to soak up the broth. I got a level one spicy but will get level two next time. The soup comes over a lil fire so it keeps the soup pipping hot! ”
“ This popular restaurant is located in the Tustin Plaza on Newport Ave. We came right on the dot when they re-open in the evening at 5:30PM so there was no wait for us. However, shortly after we were seated, the entire restaurant started to get booked up with customers...on a Thursday! It's clearly a neighborhood favorite. With respect to parking, it's pretty easy especially because it's in a shared plaza. There's only 1 food item I would avoid ordering next time: #1. GARLIC BEEF UDON ($19.50) I would order this again. It was hot, the broth flavor could stand on its own and I liked the ratios of veggies and meat. This udon soup came with a side of chili vinegar which enhanced the taste of the broth. Although their Spicy Beef udon is their most popular, I am happy this restaurant offers the garlic beef udon as an option for those whose stomach lining gets irritated by that level of heat. #2. SANSAI (MOUNTAIN VEGETABLES) UDON ($15.00) Skip. The broth flavor was like drinking water with hot vegetables. The seasoning of the broth was lacking and there was no umami flavor. I was also disappointed that the soup did not come with some sort of chili oil or soy sauce to help make it more tasty. In addition to this, the green beans were rubbery in texture. However, I will say that I did enjoy eating the mushrooms that were in it. #3. ASSORTED TEMPURA ($12.00) It's hard to go wrong with tempura. An interesting vegetable choice they included was an onion covered in tempura batter. Although this tempura assortment plate was shared by two, I honestly could have eaten it all by myself. See photo attached. I wish there was more! I will definitely be back because I saw some of the other food choices other customers around me ordered and they look scrumptious. ”
“ For first lunch date of the year, we found this hole in the wall nearby the area we were at. There is a waitlist you have to put your name on their tablet and we waited about 30-45 minutes for a party of 2 at around 12 noon so I recommend coming here accordingly or during off times when there's less of a crowd. Regardless we got seated promptly once we received the text and food came out pretty fast once we ordered. I was pleasantly surprised at how long the little hot pot display kept the soup hot. At some point it did burn my tongue so take precautionary measures. The seafood was fresh and I didn't taste anything fishy. The service was speedy but also very friendly and welcoming. It's a small little shop so not very ideal for a large crowd. I recommend 4 or less in a party to be comfortable. Parking is pretty competitive but makes sense since they themselves cannot fit too many people regardless. Will definitely be coming back! ”
“ OMG!! I love udon but this place is next level!! My husband who usually doesn't like udon raved about his meal the entire time!! It's a very small restaurant and there's definitely a good wait. Tip: put your name on yelp waitlist and dont forget to check in when you get there. The service is so great! Such friendly staff. The portion was perfect for me. We both ordered the spicy beef udon. My husband added extra beef, noodles, 2 extra levels of spicy, and we both added a poached egg. The flavors were so good! Definitely coming back here!! ”
